a while a female Betta will get a little aggressive. If they had sorted their pecking orders out in their 10-gallons tanks, watch them in the 29. Maybe provide a few plant thickets to hide out behind.
How about if you put your male swordtail in with the rosey reds and danios. That way you will peace for your female swordtail and fry you certainly wouldn't have in the combined tank. Cover than aquarium, though you probably already have.
Rosey reds are a color sport of the fathead minnows Pimephales promelas and are even sometimes a cross of two Pimephales species. They, like the danios, are free and easy egg scatterers, given their own tank. I realize that you are trying to save space, but if you moved your danios and minnows out tomorrow, you might have fry of either or both. ;)
Rosey reds can get 3-4 inches/ 10cm long. They are omnivores and might in that respect be a good match for the guppies, but they are bigger, so I would be very cautious about that. I recall you being philsophical about the consumption of fry before, so that might not be a big issue for you.
Both zebra danios and fathead minnows can take warm and pretty cool waters. However they are more active and to the extend that they might be aggressive, more so at warmer temperatures. Guppies couldn't keep up with their swimming, if they had to. Our commercial swordtails (granting them their affiliation with the wild X. helleri) are stream fish and could probably hold their own with the Cyprinids.
By the way, did you quarantine the rosey reds? I think they are neat fish in their own right, but feeders are often especially, um, "blessed" with parasites, internal and external.
I can imagine that you might be trying to save space for the golden guppies. I would too and wish I was more help. :)
Dry out the white gravel and put it in a jug for next winter. Use it under your car wheels when a little stuck. ;)
Your fish will show better with darker colors. How does a blue, green and black mix look? (I diden't think so either.) These things are in the eye of the beholder and so what you like, might not be what I would suggest. I recall favoring white/blue and white/blue/black and blue black combos before.
Of course seeding a new tank with cycled gravel must be a bear for you. When you win the Publisher's Sweepstakes (just enter, don't subscribe) buy a 50-pound bag of red flint gravel and a tank for the golden guppies. ;)
Good luck and all the best!
