Breeding

One of my mamas had been acting like she was going to drop the past few nights. I put her in the little breeder box overnight for two nights. The first night nothing happened and the next night she had 5 little babies that were just little eyes and only one had a little tail. Now her belly is really red and she isn't really swimming around with the other fish. Is she going to be ok?

This is the first time this has happened to me. I am really worried because she is one of my favorite females. Oh and she has had fry before.

Ok first never use a breeder box.  The will the death of your fish.  I use a 1 1/2 gallon tank that I got form walmart, comes with everything for only $30 or I leave them in my main tank.  The fast healthy fry will hide and stay away from the older fish.  And it will also help control you popl. in the tank.

Sometimes guppies will not drop a nice batch.  I have had 2 bad drops in the year that I have been breeding a raising guppies.  There is not really much you can do but try not to stress the fish.

As for mama I don't really know what to say because I have not had this problem.  Look under the IM area and see what you can in the birthing area and in the  Disease and Ill Health in General.  I know that I was not of much help but I hope I just a little and good luck.
Happy fish keeping :-)

Becca, I am really sorry that that happened (none / 0) (#2)

to your female guppy. That is why we have been urging folks not to move females in that last week, because sometimes this happens.

Based upon on a bad experience of mine and anecdotal evidence from others, she is internally bleeding. If your "home tank" has had a partial (25% more or less) water change in the last week, ease her back into it. If not please make that partial water change and then, if she is in that stressful and probably toxic breeder box, get her back into the tank.

She undoubtedly will do better back in your main tank. Give her and the aquarium what TLC you can. Whether she will die or survive, whether she will never have fry again or whether she will recover and give birth to fry again, only time will tell.

Only use that box for something like temporarily holding fry you are netting out of a tank. Or toss it in the recycle barrel. Please never put an adult livebearer in one of those things again.

Sorry to bear such negative news.
