Hi, my fish need help urgently.

I have a 13.2-gallon tank with 5 guppies, one female, 4 males. There is also a sucker fish, and 5 little fry, (although they're in the breeder tank) Last week I got sick and tired of my plague of snails, so I bought a chemical which contains copper sulphate. After using it the next day my guppies were all in one corner and stayed there for 2 days, after doing a 50 % water change!! They started coming back into the depth of the aquarium. Then I noticed their tails were "dissolving" and went to the pet shop. They diagnosed it as fin rot, although I never told him about the copper sulphate. Then I bought fin rot cure and their tails seem to have stopped disappearing. Can you tell me what happened?
I WILL NEVER USE, OR PROMOTE OR ADVISE ANYONE TO USE ANY CHEMICAL TO KILL SNAILS!!! NEVER!
I've realized now. If it can kill a snail it can kill a fish.

Also, 4 males to 1 female is not a good ratio. The males will take turns chasing the female relentlessly which stresses her & causes her immune system to go down which allows her to get sick easier.

i found the best way to get rid of your snails is when u switch the lights off at night put a little torch on the front of the tank and the snails will go towards the light, so in the morning all u have to do is scoop them out with a net.

I recomend a medium to large fantail goldfish they eat all the snails

One needs to think "Half Life' about changing water at a rate of 50%. That takes out 50% of the Copper. A 100 % change is in order to get rid of the metal. A second change of 50% will reduce the level only 25%

It is an equlibrum situation when one changes a portion of the tank out. One never gets back to the origional water quality without a 100% change.

Just something to think about.

I've found the best way to kill snails is to buy something that eats them, like a loach, or a puffer.
